The Middle Gate Is Where Your Summer Actually Is This Year

July 23, 2026

Most Chesapeake Ranch Estates weekends still start the same way. Out the front gate at Rousby Hall Road, down H.G. Trueman toward Solomons, park somewhere near the boardwalk, and hope the line at the Tiki Bar isn't wrapped around the deck. It is a routine older than most of the split-levels off Tomahawk Trail, and for a lot of residents it is the whole mental map of "going out."

That map is out of date for the summer of 2026. The interesting openings this year are closer to the middle gate than the front, the Solomons trip is worth planning around two specific dates instead of a general drift, and the two amenities your POACRE dues already pay for are quietly the best waterfront in a five mile radius on a Saturday afternoon. This post is a routing guide, not a roundup.

The middle gate is doing more work than the front gate this summer

Lusby Town Center sits about a mile off the H.G. Trueman exit, and it has gone from a grocery-and-post-office stop to something you can actually spend an evening in. WhataBoba at 232 Town Square Drive opened as the first boba shop in Lusby, which sounds like a small thing until you consider that the nearest previous option was a thirty minute drive. It is now the default after-dinner walk for families who live off Rawhide or Catalina and do not want to fight the Solomons bridge traffic on a Friday.

Two doors down the same shopping center, Las Catrinas Mexican Kitchen at 11777 H.G. Trueman has become the weekday anchor. Dynasty Chinese sits at 11771 in the same complex, and La Vela Italian at 182 Village Center Drive has the water view most people assume you have to cross the bridge for, with a table on Back Creek that costs the same as a mainland strip mall. Ledo Pizza is at 13450 HG Truman for the short walk from Chesapeake Hills Golf Course.

The commercial layer around the middle gate keeps thickening. Calvert County's economic development office lists Diamond Noir Collective at 224 Town Square Drive and Habit Fitness at 13932 HG Trueman among businesses that opened, expanded, or relocated within the last twelve months. That is not a "coming soon" list. Those doors are open now.

Solomons is worth the drive on two specific Saturdays

The Solomons trip should stop being a default and start being a plan. Two dates in particular earn the bridge crossing this summer.

The first is Saturday, July 11, when the Calvert Marine Museum runs SHARKFEST from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with advance ticketing recommended and the event running rain or shine. Sharks are outside at the Corbin Pavilion, which means the line stays moving and the museum's interior stays cool for the stroller crowd. If you have out-of-town family visiting in July, this is the day to schedule the visit around.

The second is any Sunday brunch at the Tiki Bar. This is new. The bar at 85 Charles Street is celebrating its 46th anniversary and, per BayNet reporting from April, is now open seven days a week with brunch added, an updated menu, orange crushes back on the list, and live music continuing through summer. The seven-day schedule matters more than the menu changes. The Tiki Bar used to be a Friday-Saturday-Sunday-only proposition that concentrated the entire island's crowd into three windows. A Tuesday afternoon crush is a different afternoon than a Saturday one.

Newer to the map is Trifecta at Harbor Island Marina, which opened October 30 under Lusby-born sisters Ashley Mason and Meagan Cox with their mother April Sisk, a former Tiki Bar bartender who has owned Hidden Harbour in Dowell since 2015. Hours run 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Monday, closed Tuesday. The menu leans Polynesian-fusion over the usual Southern Maryland crab-and-hushpuppies template, which is the first genuinely different thing to eat on the island in a while.

The shortest way to ruin a Saturday in July is to leave the Ranch at 12:30 for Solomons. The Route 4 bridge is not on your side. The middle gate exists to fix this.

The two-mile beach nobody uses on a Saturday

Here is the number that reframes the summer. Calvert County's public beach at Solomons is a twelve minute drive from the front gate on a good day, and a twenty five minute drive on a July Saturday when Route 4 backs up before the bridge. Lake Lariat is inside the neighborhood.

The POACRE amenity page describes what is already yours: two private sandy beaches on the Chesapeake Bay at Driftwood and Seahorse, a large manmade freshwater lake for swimming, fishing and sailing, a wooded campground, hiking trails, horseshoe pits, and an athletic field. Lake Lariat has lifeguards in the summer and a children's playground. Total drive time from the average lot inside CRE is measured in minutes, not tens of minutes, and there is no bridge involved.

This is where a lot of residents underuse what they are paying for. Dues on this scale, roughly $17 to $50 a month depending on the reporting source, are unusual for a community that includes two Bay beaches and a lake. Most Calvert County waterfront access sits behind day-use fees or drive time. Yours does not.

A Saturday, routed by gate

The point of naming all this is not to fill a checklist. It is to show that a July weekend built around CRE's own geography looks nothing like the Solomons default. Here is one version, using all three gates:

Time Stop Gate
8:30 a.m. Coffee run to The Beanery on H.G. Trueman Middle
10:00 a.m. SHARKFEST at Calvert Marine Museum, July 11 only Front
12:30 p.m. Lunch at Las Catrinas or La Vela on Back Creek Middle
2:00 p.m. Lake Lariat with lifeguards on duty Inside
5:30 p.m. Sunset cruise with Big Kahuna, $55 per seat Front
8:00 p.m. Late plate at Trifecta, kitchen open until 9 Front
9:30 p.m. Boba walk at WhataBoba, Town Square Drive Middle

Nothing on that list requires more than a fifteen minute drive from a home inside the neighborhood. Half of it does not require leaving.

The rhythms that have not moved

A few things about summer here are exactly the same as they were five years ago, and residents who moved in during the pandemic sometimes forget them. Route 4 traffic peaks Friday between 4 and 6 p.m. as Pax River commuters clear the base, and again Sunday between 3 and 5 as weekend visitors head back north. The back gate off Little Cove Point Road is the escape hatch for both windows, and Chesapeake Hills Golf Course sits right on that stretch if you want to kill an hour instead of sitting in it.

Heat advisories are running earlier than they used to. Calvert County posted a heat advisory for July 15 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., which is the kind of forecast that makes an 8 a.m. Lake Lariat trip and a 6 p.m. porch dinner a better plan than any midday activity. If you are hosting family this month, the schedule matters more than the itinerary.

The private airpark still shows up on the sectional charts as MD50, and the runway lights still come on at dusk. That has not changed. What has changed is that the food a mile from your driveway is finally worth walking to.

Why this matters if you own here

Two summers ago, the sales pitch for a house on Bronco or Golden West Way leaned heavily on the Solomons proximity story. The commute to the water was what listing copy talked about, because it was what buyers asked about. That story is still true and still relevant, but it is no longer the whole story. The mainland side of the neighborhood now has restaurants worth walking to, a boba shop that runs late, a fitness studio in the same shopping center, and a boutique that did not exist a year ago.

For anyone thinking about a move within the neighborhood, or a renovation that changes which gate you use most often, this is useful context. The front-gate lots off Rousby Hall trade at a premium because of Solomons. The middle-gate lots off H.G. Trueman have quietly closed part of that gap without the price catching up yet. A porch on the Trueman side of the community is now within walking distance of things that did not exist when most of these houses last traded.

The current owners who figure this out first are the ones whose weekends stop revolving around a bridge crossing they do not need to make.
